Imagine this: you’re driving your tractor around your fields after a hard rain and suddenly, you stop moving. You try to hit the gas, but your tracks or wheels simply spin and send up splashes of mud. You’re stuck! What do you do? There are several things you can try to get your tractor out of the mud and we’ve outlined some of the best tactics below.

Lift Your Implements

Before you do anything else, stop your tractor and raise your implements or attachments up off the ground to get them out of the way. Engage the differential lock to keep the implement in place.

Try to Move Forwards & Backwards

You can gently apply gas and try to maneuver your tractor forward or put the tractor in reverse and ease it backward. One of these directions might jostle your tractor out of the muck and free you easily. However, if your tracks or wheels simply spin out again, stop what you’re doing to try something else.

Grab a Shovel & Some Boards

Turn off the engine and put your tractor in park. Go to your shed to grab some long, flat wooden planks. Slipped under the rear of your tractor’s tracks or tires, wooden planks can give you the necessary traction to free your machine. A shovel lets you dig out the mud from around the tracks or tires so that they’re not deeply buried. Once you’ve done this, you can climb into the cab and try reversing once more.

Phone a Friend

If all else fails, you can call a neighbor with their own tractor and winch so that they can bring their equipment over to pull you out of the ditch. Just make sure that they’re far enough away that they don’t get stuck, too!
